combat. some call it a breakthrough. some are worried about the decision. but first, winter weather moving closer, salt trucks and snowplows roaming the streets and prepare for snowfall overnight. let's start out with sue in the weather center. >> brian, this is certainly not going to be a huge snow, but it's going to be just enough that there could be slick spots. a winter weather advisory is in effect for the area. first stop will be radar, so you can see what we are seeing and we're seeing snow to our south and that is building around the fredericksburg area and trying to expand. this area of low pressure is going to be a fast mover. it's not really tapping a lot of moisture. it will have energy with it as it moves on through and it will be a fast process. i think we'll get what we'll get between now and before the time the sun comes up. maybe lingering flurries for the morning rush hour. but this weak low with its fast movement could deposit just enough snow to make for some slippery spots and the crews

are out trying to treat the roads, but the pavement is colder than the air temperature, which is mighty cold. we are worried any snow that we get together, powdery and light as it will be, will be quick to stick. so most everything should be covered, at least those areas that get the snow. far to the north, might not get too much. in the district, it will be closer to a dusting. those untreated surfaces will be slick. there could be some delays. the best chance is south of d.c., because there is an area that could get more. and then we'll be tracking a second system that might be more widespread for friday. we'll talk more about that and get an update on temperatures. they have dropped here at 11:00. >> sue, you can get hourly updates as it drops at the weather app. down load it on your iphone or ipad. find it on myfoxdc.com. following breaking news in southwest virginia. the university of virginia campus is on lockdown.

after someone report add gunman on campus. officials are telling all students to find a safe place and stay there. we are joined by a student from leesburg. what can you tell us about what happened tonight? >> well, a student in one of the departments reported a gunman. the police officers told us they searched multiple dorm rooms and haven't found anyone. however, the s.w.a.t. team is in all the rooms searching and all of my friends have been telling me that they have been coming in there and supposedly -- >> say it again? >> it is gang related. >> gang related. are they searching a particular portion of the campus? are they looking in the dorms or classrooms? >> all of the dorms are being searched. that's what is going first. he didn't say anything about the classrooms yet because all the reports were inside the dorm room. >> and who reported this gunman on campus? >> we don't know. it's a male that is in custody

currently and being questioned by the police. >> have you noticed gang activity down there in your parof virginia? >> no. i didn't know there were any gangs in this part of virginia. i thought it was mainly richmond and northern virginia based. >> and are you concerned right now? do you feel like the authorities have it under control? >> well, i'm kind of concerned because we had a bank robbery here last year and the person got away on his bicycle. >> okay. the uva wise campus right now. she is from leesburg. stay in your dorm, stay safe, and we'll keep our viewers apprise of the situation as well. thank you for joining us. >> thank you. >> the defense secretary lifting the ban on women serving in combat. banning women from being assigned to smaller combat units. bob barnard is here with that story. bob. >> the official pentagon announcement is expected tomorrow with words some combat jobs may open up later this

year. while others, including positions with the navy seals and the army's delta force, may take longer to green light. >> they are not strangers to war. 14% of our active duty military are women who soon may be allowed to join the ranks of the combat tested. >> at long last, we are making progress. >> based on a recommendation by the joint chiefs of staff, defense secretary, leon pinetta is expected to open up infantry positions to women. a move that is bound to generate controversy, says michael, a national security analyst with the brookings institution. >> i don't think this is going to be over just because he gave the announcement. he also said the services have until 2016 to do this or to give an explanation as to why certain kinds of units might not be appropriate. >> the secretary should be congratulated for having the

courage to take this step. >> retired air force general, wilma, is head of the women in military service for america memorial at arlington cemetery. a place dedicated to the sacrifice and service of women in our military throughout our nation's history. >> there aren't any front lines. the lines are everywhere. when you go into that whole country or arena, you are in combat. >> last fall for the first time, two women marines were invited to compete in a 30 week infantry officer's course at quantico. after both dropped out, marine argued. >> we are wearing 75 plus pounds a day. it took a toll on my body. >> do you want to essentially restructure the front line infantry organizations of the army and marine corps that could end up being a small amount of women? >> that will be a big part of the debate and it's going to be

obama nominated john kerry as her replacement. the news edge in virginia where two women were killed in a fire in falls church this morning. crews responding to the call on manner road. a single story home engulfed in flames. approximately 30 minutes. both victims who neighbors say are a mother and daughter who are both deaf were found during searches of the home. people close to them are saddened by the news. >> really, i can tell you, we love them. it's hard to believe they die. it's hard for us. we were close with them. >> authorities have not confirmed the identities of the victims until they notify family. two dogs and eight cats killed in the fire. cause under investigation. the news edge on maryland tonight. the trial continues for an anne arundel county executive accused of misconduct in

office. accused of using his security detail to help him with his campaign. today's chief of staff testified about a robo call system. >> he never ordered anyone to take part in john's reelection campaign. but admitted he acted as coordinator for any coworkers who did. he said, as chief of staff, he knew about the controversy involving the executive protection detail. and his orders, the officers help him with campaign signs and other campaign related activities. roby testified he overheard john telling one of the officers to check on his campaign signs at various locations around the county. he told the court, he didn't think what the officers were doing was wrong. the state then called corporal, mark walker, to the stand who went into great detail about the things john told him to do that had nothing to do with

protection. walker testified about putting up campaign signs, taking them down, emptying the county executive's catheter bag into a coffee can. delivering newspapers to his house, and driving him to parking lots where he would have sex with a county employee. all of this while on the county payroll. walker described making 38 hours of overtime over a four- day period. while making sure his lover did not cross paths with his live in girlfriend when he was layed up in the hospital. walker also told the court he drove around the county picking up campaign donations on orders from john leapold. when asked by prosecutors if he told his supervisors what was going on, walker replied he did. he was told to keep the county executive happy. on cross-examination, walker testified he did not think what leapold had him doing was illegal. hi contributed to the county

executive's reelection campaign. when walker was told he was being transferred, he didn't want to go. he enjoyed his time on the detail. mark walker also told the court he was with john on at least one occasion where he watched the county executive get out of the car, pick up an opponent's campaign sign and throw it into the woods. walker is the third officer to testify about seeing him do just that. in annapolis, paul wagner, fox 5 news. >> on a daybreaking news from the top of the hour, southwest virginia, the lockdown has been lifted at uvay. the gunman is reported in one of the dorms. all students safe and that lockdown has been lifted. a warning for local parents. why some could be sent to jail if their kids miss too many days of school. and it happens every week. find out the exact day and time that women look their oldest. coming up.

people falling all over the sidewalks. a few skiers going out of control. now this video is going viral. good news is, we aren't getting that kind of snow tonight. >> good. i can see it filling in. >> i checked outside, we have the most fine flurries i have seen in a long time. as in very, very tiny. it is starting to get through that dry air. we'll have a small amount. a coating to an inch for some areas and heavier down to the south. so it's not because this is a big storm that it's getting attention, but just enough to make it slippery. we want to give you a head's up so you don't take a slip. we have our snow machine mode, so we can see where light snow may be trying to hit the ground. now we know that it is starting up in d.c. and we had calls from prince georges county and other places, so we know you are starting to see flurries. there will be a few hours of

light snow, but every flake will do its best to stick. over to sental radar. we'll put a bigger picture in motion. there will be a swoth of heavier snow. watch out in spotsylvania, culpeper, over to waldorf, maybe here in the northern neck. you're going to see a little bit more than the rest of us might see. but this system does not have a whole lot of moisture to work with. we have this batch that is growing over us and might be one more to come. although this looks like it is shrinking. they move quickly and they don't typically have a lot of moisture with them. we want you to be extra careful because with this cold air, it can be slippery on your front step, your driveway, and a couple spots where road crews can't get to overnight. this is the winter weather advisory. it kicks in at midnight. we aren't expecting a coating, but i think that will happen fairly quickly here and the

winter weather advisory goes at 9:00 in the morning. does not include washington county or garrett. but just about everywhere else. some of you might see some flurries, because there might not be a big northward push. there will be a swoth of heavier snow, which will include northern neck, into central virginia. but the rest of us are talking about somewhere between a coating to about an inch. not like a coating on grass. pavement is cold out there tonight. here is future cast blowing up the snow at this hour. and rushing it out of town pretty quickly, 3:00 in the morning, maybe a lot over to the beaches and still talking about light snow here and there. at 8:00 in the morning, tracking a little heading down to our south. but i think most of us will be down to flurries. could be slippery in a few spots and i will not be surprised if we end up with two- hour delays. it is out of here and tomorrow

afternoon will be brighter, still blustery and chilly with high temperatures only close to 30 degrees. we have another chance for snow friday afternoon, but i wanted to show you something in case the cold is wearing you down. i know i feel like a hibernating animal. 28 degrees was our high temperature. buffalo 15, but look at this. atlanta 56 degrees. warmer air is on the map. dallas 75. little rock 63. while we keep this cold air around a little more at international falls, what are you complaining about? 5 below was the high today. we'll warm up next week. i'll show you two seasons in one here on our seven-day forecast. light snow early in the morning. we'll know what we have on the ground before the sun comes up. 30 degrees tomorrow. colder on friday, afternoon snow as well. could be more significant. a cold weekend only in the low 30s and then we are starting to jump things up monday, and some of that southern heat, visits washington with a temperature of 56 degrees possible on
